In November 2024, Nickel Bros successfully relocated UBC’s historic Old Fire Hall, a landmark originally built in 1926. The building, known for its distinctive brick façade and hose tower, was one of the first structures on the Point Grey campus and served as a fire station until 1982. For over 40 years, it housed UBC’s Department of Art History, Visual Art & Theory.
The move was necessary to make way for the Sauder School of Business’s expansion project. Rather than demolish the building, UBC chose to preserve it by carefully relocating it across campus. Working with UBC Properties Trust and Heatherbrae Builders, Nickel Bros expertly lifted and transported the structure to a temporary site east of the Life Sciences Centre.
The Old Fire Hall will eventually become part of a major student housing redevelopment project, which will add over 1,500 new residence beds to the campus. Future plans will repurpose the building for student-focused programs, ensuring it remains a meaningful part of UBC’s evolving landscape.
This move reflects UBC’s commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing future growth, and highlights Nickel Bros’ unique expertise in relocating large, historically significant structures.
